Acer Aspire 5755

Acer has launched another range of colourful notebooks, and this time it is the Aspire 5755 and 4755 that have been painted in five natural hues – Amazon Green, Pacific Blue, Desert Brown, Sunset Red and Monsoon Black – all part of Acer’s ‘Gorgeous by Nature’ line, starting from Rs. 27,499. The laptops will be available across Acer retail outlets, and its store online.

Both the 15.6-inch Aspire 5755 and 14-inch Aspire 4755 bear 1366x768 resolution screens, and the same base configurations – Core i3-2310M processor with Intel HD 3000 graphics, choice of Linux or Windows 7 operating systems, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, choice of GeForce GT 500 series dedicated graphics with up to 2GB of VRAM, a 500GB hard drive, Dolby Advanced Audio v2 sound, Acer’s Crystal Eye HD webcam, a multi-card reader, and a multi-touch pad.

Speaking about the new product line up, Mr. S. Rajendran, Chief Marketing Officer, Acer India, said:

“Acer for the first time has introduced a product line in different hues and tones that symbolizes nature’s different elements. Gorgeously styled to stand out from the crowd, the “Gorgeous by Nature” series will make a remarkable style statement among the youths. We understand the consumer’s changing demands and to meet the requirements, we have launched Aspire 5755. Acer Aspire product portfolio has always been popular and we are confident that our consumers will take the position of a preferred laptop.”

MSI GX780

The GX780 is a well-built notebook, and obviously an attempt at the upmarket audience. However, it is let down by a mediocre GPU - the GT555M isn't a hardcore gamers' GPU, and at a price of Rs. 1,19,999, it doesn't satisfy us. Especially when we’ve tested the ASUS G74SX, which has a GT560M GPU, a stereoscopic display; and is a significantly better performer for just Rs. 5,000 more.

Pros

· Customizable backlit LED keyboard

· Full 1080p HD display

· Supports USB 3.0, E-SATA and HDMI ports

Cons

· Expensive

· Poor battery life

· Average gaming performance

MSI aims to address the needs of gamers with the release of GX780 gaming laptop, that is designed and developed by Team Fnatic - the world's popular professional gaming team in association with SteelSeries - a leading gaming keyboard manufacturer in Europe. The completely customizable backlit LED keyboard with about 5 different LED scenario modes is an interesting feature for the enthusiasts and gamers. Let us find out if the laptop can truly perform up to the expectations, apart from its exquisitely impressive set of features including customizable LED keyboard, full HD display, and DirectX 11 texture rendering. Its GPU also supports Nvidia 3D Vision - but there's no stereoscopic display onboard however.

Look and Feel
The GX780 is well built with Aluminium brushed metal finish on the lid, rubberized finish on the sides of the keypad and the palmrest. The palm-rest itself is well crafted with matte-textured finish to give it a classic look. The two shiny, rectangular-shaped grilled speakers above the keypad on either side it, attract ones attention. The hot function keys gives access to movie mode, adjusting fan speed, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optical drive eject. The display's glossy finish makes it glaring when exposed to direct sunlight or a brightly lit room. The sharp-cut edges on the corners of the lid and chassis stand out along with the delicately cut edges of the trackpad. However, its exterior design is too simplistic in comparison with the Alienware laptops that have contours and such other designs that make them that much more pleasing to the eye.

Meanwhile, the Windows key is shifted to the right to provide bigger 'left ctrl' and 'alt' keys for the gamers. The isolated keypad design enhances keyboard usability and navigation by providing sufficient key-spacing that is particularly important for making those vital combo moves in hack and slash games. With due credit to SteelSeries, the keyboard design gets a makeover, which has vastly improved the keyboard ergonomics and responsiveness. The gamers would love the flexibility of pressing up to 10 keys simultaneously during those close combats for making quick second special moves!

Features

The GX780 has a 17.3-inch display that runs at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, making it an ideal entertainment device too. Adding support for the NVIDIA 3D Vision and DirectX 11 gives you the advantage of stereoscopic 3D experience, as well as run the latest games on optimized settings for better texture rendering. In addition, by including a 720p HD webcam and USB 3.0 interface, the GX780 strengthens its claim to be a complete multimedia laptop. If you are a hardcore gamer who likes customizing the rig to its limits, then you would love the idea of choosing between several LED colour combinations split across five scenario modes for tweaking your keyboard's backlight LED through the Keyboard LED Manager. Depending on your taste and usage purpose, you could choose between Normal mode, Gaming mode, Breathing mode, Wave mode and Dual colour mode for the keyboard backlight LED. Other interesting feature includes a set of hotkeys sandwiched between the two grilled speakers at the top of the keyboard. Among them the noteworthy ones are the turbo button that allows you to overclock the processor to its limits, while the cooler boost button revs up the fan speed to keep the laptop from overheating at peak loads.

Performance
The GX780 delivers comparatively much better performance than the ASUS G53Jw across most of the synthetic benchmarks including the PC Mark Vantage and Maxxon CineBench R11.5 CPU score, wherein the GX780 holds the scores of 8233 and 4.88, as against the G53Jw's scores of 6980 and 2.91.

This difference in scores might be attributed to GX780’s superior 2nd generation Core i7 processor. However, its gaming score of 54.6 fps across S.T.A.L.K.E.R Call of Pripyat at medium settings with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, is just marginally better than the ASUS G53Jw that scored 47.12fps. Also, its performance across Dirt 3 and Aliens Vs Predator is ordinary at medium settings, with scores of 41.07 and 44.2 frames per second respectively. However, good sound reproduction and impressive HD video playback performance sans stuttering and pixilation are its desirable traits. The low battery-life doesn’t come as a surprise for such a powerful configuration.

Verdict
The GX780 is a well-built notebook, and obviously an attempt at the upmarket audience. However, it is let down by a mediocre GPU – the GT555M isn’t a hardcore gamers' GPU, and at a price of Rs. 1,19,999, it doesn’t satisfy us. Especially when we’ve tested the ASUS G74SX for a mere 5,000 bucks more that has a GT560M and is a significantly better performer.

Asus Eee PC X101

Asus has launched a new netbook in India, called the Eee PC X101. It has arrived here ahead of several major international territories, such as the U.S. and Europe, where it is expected in the next couple of weeks.

Priced at Rs. 12,499, the 10.1-inch netbook bears a very basic hardware configuration, and we wonder just how well it will do in the market, when there are plenty of other full-featured netbook offerings out there, at negligibly higher prices. Asus wants aims for it to be an alternative to both netbooks and tablets.

Asus has also chosen to release the Eee PC X101 with MeeGo onboard, not Windows, or any regular full-featured distro like openSUSE or Ubuntu. Looking at the specifications, which read almost like a tablet’s, we realize nothing else but MeeGo might work – with just 8GB of built-in storage space (SSD), and 1GB of RAM. As many folks in the industry have observed, the netbook is a hybrid of a tablet and a netbook, unfortunately – keeping the worst of both worlds. No surfeit of ports (with no VGA and Ethernet), no optical drive, and no touchscreen.

The Taiwanese giant apparently intends to provide a fast, rich and intuitive computing experience, while at the same time keeping costs low with the operating system, and hardware. As for storage, a glaring omission, Asus has pre-loaded Dropbox cloud storage for free, allowing users to store some real data.

The Asus Eee PC X101 comes with a choice of an Intel Atom N435 or N455 processor. Other specs include Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, a webcam, two USB2.0 ports, and a 3-cell battery that promises a four-hour battery life, using Asus’ Super Hybrid Engine (SHE). It will be available in white, red and brown.

Speaking on the launch of the tablet in India, Asus’ Country Head, Alex Huang, said:

“In Asus X101 netbook we have integrated the consumer's productive needs with his lifestyle requirements to enrich our customers’ experience. I am sure this new offering will bring in substantial traction.”

Lenovo IdeaPad U260

The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 retails for a price of Rs. 44,990, with no variants, and while it has a unique form factor, useful proprietary software, and is easy to carry; it falls short in terms of connectivity features and overall performance. Unless Lenovo equips the IdeaPad U260 with better hardware for improved performance or slashes its price under Rs. 40,000, the 13-inch Dell Vostro V130 will always be recommended first.

Pros

· Slim and stylish

· Lightweight, easy to carry

· Face detection software

· One-touch backup and recovery

· Spill-resistant keyboard

Cons

· Only two USB ports

· No card reader

· Below average performance

· Low screen brightness

The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is an interesting thin and light laptop from the Chinese PC manufacturer. The IdeaPad U260 is sleek, stylish, has a 12-inch form factor and comes with an Intel Core i3-380UM ultra-low voltage processor to balance battery life and everyday performance. The laptop doesn’t skimp on useful proprietary Lenovo software and is aimed towards mobile professionals and students. Let’s see what the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 has to offer.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260: Look and Feel
For a company that’s renowned around the world for its rugged business laptop line -- ThinkPad -- Lenovo has tried its hand at crafting a thin, stylish-looking laptop with the IdeaPad U260. The thin and light U260 definitely has elegance and flair in plenty, its screen lid is covered in smooth aluminum coloured in coffee brown, giving the IdeaPad U260 a snazzy look -- the same surface extends on to the laptop’s bottom panel.

Prop the laptop open to reveal an all-black keyboard, touchpad and palmrest -- the palmrest is covered in faux leather, which is soft to touch and gives the U260 a premium feel. Where the Dell Vostro V130 -- a similar thin and light laptop -- has an all-metal exterior, the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 differs to include a slightly more trendy look and feel, even giving the stylish Sony VAIO S a run for its money.

The IdeaPad U260 is 0.7-inch thin and weighs just 1.35 kg - that’s lesser than the Dell Vostro, Sony VAIO S and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 but not the MacBook Air. Despite its thin form factor, the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is well built -- the screen hinge is secure, the keyboard or palmrest dips very slightly -- the overall impression is pretty good; we feel however the Vostro V130 is slightly more sturdy. The 12-inch laptop’s easy to tuck away in your backpack amidst files and folders and you don’t really feel its weight while lugging the IdeaPad U260 around.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260: Screen
The thin and light Lenovo IdeaPad U260 laptop comes with a one-of-a-kind 12.5-inch display screen, with a standard 1366x768 pixel resolution -- it has a non-glossy or matte surface. The widescreen display is evenly lit but insufficiently bright – it’s definitely not as bright as the Sony VAIO S’ screen. Viewing contents off the screen outdoors, under direct sunlight is disappointing. The IdeaPad U260’s screen doesn’t tilt back a whole lot and its viewing angles are average, nothing out of the ordinary here. Reading text for extended time is good, but watching movies or videos isn’t as good as a laptop with glossy screen -- Dell Inspiron 15R, for example. However, the screen’s ambient light sensor did a good job of adjusting screen brightness dynamically.

The IdeaPad U260 has a webcam on its screen bezel which comes with CyberLink’s YouCam software for adding a bit of fun to your webchats.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260: Keyboard & Touchpad
Traditionally Lenovo keyboards are one of the best in the business, the same can’t be said of the IdeaPad U260’s keyboard. We like the U260 keyboard’s scalloped, curved keys which fit well on pressing fingers -- but the keys aren’t full-sized. They keys are isolated but not raised enough for an optimum typing experience. We encountered no keyboard flex, but typing on the Lenovo IdeaPad U260’s keyboard for people with bigger, larger fingers will be a touch inconvenient. The keyboard is spill-resistant.

The touchpad is smooth and a joy to use, though. It’s of adequate size for the laptop’s 12-inch form factor and performs well while manipulating the mouse on screen. The two distinct mouse buttons below the IdeaPad U260’s touchpad are of average build quality and make a small clicking noise when pressed. Special mention of the U260’s faux leather palmrest -- it’s the right size and cushions the wrists and palm to provide a comfortable typing experience.
